چکیده

The IEEE 802.11 standard is the most popular Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for wireless local area networks. However, when the IEEE 802.11 MAC is used in wireless ad hoc networks, it will suffer from more serious hidden terminal and exposed terminal problems than those in WLAN. More specifically, it is resulted from the “large” interference range and the “large“ carrier sensing range. In this paper, we propose an adaptive IEEE 802.11 MAC (AMAC) that makes two simple modifications of IEEE 802.11 to dynamically adjust the transmission rights and reception wills in accordance with the shared medium status near transmitter and receiver, respectively. Simulation results show that our method can lessen interferences and increase system throughput as compared with IEEE 802.11 MAC in the multihop wireless ad hoc networks.

Does the IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol Work Well in Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks?

The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is the standard for wireless LANs; it is widely used in testbeds and simulations for wireless multihop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multihop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc network, in which multihop connectivity is one of the most prominent f...

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Achieving Fairness over 802.11 Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for medium access control in wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) is the de facto standard for wireless ad hoc networks. However, it does not perform well in terms of fairness, delay and throughput specially, in multihop networks. The problem is due to both the MAC and link layer contentions. Many research papers have been published in these fields. Among them, a modific...

A Jamming-Based MAC Protocol for Wireless Multihop Ad Hoc Networks

One critical issue in multihop ad hoc networks is the medium access control (MAC). The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is originally designed for fully connected, one-hop ad hoc networks but not for multihop ad hoc networks. In addition to the well known hiddenterminal problem, we found that IEEE 802.11 also suffers from an erroneous reservation problem which occurs when RTS-CTS exchange fails but the...
